Oh god oh god oh god how did this get here I am not good with computer

I watched Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs yesterday. In 3D. I had written that film off completely upon seeing the trailer, but after Mr Kricfalusi said it was the best CGI film he's seen (giving it a 0 out of 10, as opposed to the negative thousands he'd give everything other than Toy Story 1) I had to give it a chance. It was actually pretty fun, despite the unpalatable character designs. Unashamed silliness saved it.

I haven't been posting lately because I've been working. FINALLY I HAVE MY OWN MONEY AGAIN. What was the first thing I purchased after getting a paycheque? A ton of manga. I'm so ashamed.

I'm trying to think of something relevant to say but I can't. So here's an irrelevant image.
If I had this t-shirt I would never take it off ever.

row row, fight the powah etc etc.

Seriously though, what work do you do? this was like the one question I should have asked you at picasso and I didn't. I don't really know what one does as an animator when one leaves uni. I read that you did some work at cartoon network and obviously all that stuff for damian.

Is this prying? I hope I'm not prying. Just don't answer me if I am.

Well, in terms of what, exactly? Medium and process, or the general type of work? As an example, at the moment I'm working for some friends from my year who set up a studio by themselves. Specifically it's a job for E4, and I'm doing Flash animation (traditional frame-by-frame style). Actually, all my real jobs have been Flash animation of some sort or other. Just before this I was working on a Ben10 promo at CN, also in Flash. Prior to that, I did a fairly big job at Picasso, involving a combination of Flash and After Effects. And my first real job was all Flash (cut-out style, though). Aside from Damian's film I've had all of one job that actually needed my 3D knowledge, and that was only a week long. I've acquired my jobs thus far entirely through luck and contacts. What work you get depends on how you sell your skillset.

So much for Damian telling all of us that we wouldn't be able to get work without knowing 3D. HOHOHO.

It must be so easy when you're a character animation prodigy! ;_; I assume most of this stuff is character based, it seems to be something you're interested in in general. I meant what jobs you worked on and where, really. I assume since you live in london you get by okay money-wise doing more freelancey stuff? I'd obviously like to stay living here rather than move back home.

I'm really counting on doing some good, specialised work this year so I can sell myself a little better - I can't remember if I said this already but my second year work is all pretty dire, thanks to me kind of jumping on the animation bandwagon a little late. We have the sinfonietta project on right now which is already really fun and will probably result in something good. Hopefully I can work character animation into a project later this year.

It really grinds my gears that we don't get a more fundamental grounding in animation at kingston. We asked the tutors why they don't include more basic techniques and historical stuff and they basically said "because students complained about it". Oy!
